Windows 8 updates keep failing at 12%?

Windows 8 has been having a few issues when updating on some systems. The start screen loosing all its tiles or apps; Or getting stuck at 12%, then after a long while failing to install the updates.
The first issue of Windows 8 tiles vanishing from the start screen is very easy to fix. Simply shut down the computer, then switch it back on again and all the tiles should be back as they were.
The second issue of Windows 8 failing to install the updates is a little harder to resolve, but following the instructions below will solve the problem.

To begin boot Windows 8 into 'Safemode'.

On the desktop, click on 'File Explorer' or start it from the start screen.
Click on the Windows C: drive.
Next double click on the Windows folder.
Then double click on the SoftwareDistribution folder.
Now delete the 'DataStore' and 'Download' folders.

Note: This deletes all the downloaded updates.
Now restart the computer as normal.
On the Start screen type 'control panel'.
Select it from the list.
Firstly if not already selected, choose view by 'Small icons'.

Select 'Device manager' from the list.
On the Display adaptors, expand by clicking the + symbol.
Right click on the driver and select uninstall.
Do NOT tick the box to delete the driver software, as this will make it easier to install the drivers again later.
Do the same for the sound drivers, uninstall the driver but do NOT delete the software.

Close the Device manager window.
Now open the Windows update program from the Control panel.
Click on 'Check for updates'.
Click to view the available updates.
If there are any updates over 100MB in size, untick the box.
Do any updates over 100MB in size one at a time, after a restart of the computer.

Note: After each restart, start again by deleting the display and sound drivers before installing the next large update.
Once the update(s) have been installed, restart the computer.
At times it may seem like the computer is stuck again installing the updates, it's completely normal.

Once all the updates are installed, the system should be good to go for any future updates without issue.
