What’s a cookie?

No we aren’t on about a chocolate chip biscuit variety.
Cookies are used in web browsers, commonly known as a ‘HTTP cookie’ or a ‘web cookie’. The cookies are used by websites to hold information for your browser about the website you’re visiting. Only the website the cookie was created for can view the cookie. The information held in a cookie can be used for authentication, a user’s preferences, the contents of a shopping cart or anything else that can be accomplished through storing text data on the computer.
Cookies can’t be programmed or carry viruses, and cannot install malware on a computer. However, they can be used by spyware to track your browsing activities. Cookies can also be stolen by hackers to gain access to web accounts.
That's the basics on HTTP cookies, but if you want to know more in greater detail click here.
