HEIF is the new photo format.

What is HEIF?

High Efficiency Image Format, is the replacement for the old jpg format. Why? Well HEIF produces images with a smaller file size at a high resolution.

In a world where we can take photos on cameras with ever increasing megapixels, we need a new way to store our higher quality images.

The new format has already appeared in the new Iphone and will come to Android and Windows 10 shortly.

Advantages of the new format.

HEIF isn’t just about a smaller file sizes. HEIF images offer a variety of extras that aren’t available in JPEG, like transparency and 16-bit color. The old JPEG format is only 8-bit color.

You can apply edits like rotation, cropping, titles, and overlays to HEIF images. These edits are stored without altering the underlying image which means you can undo any changes at a later date, should you want to.

The disadvantages.
The only disadvantage and its a biggy, is compaitiblity. The old jpg format can be read by any devices that can display a picture, that is not going to be the case with HEIF. Its going to take time for devices to work with the new format. And not all devices will.

Software support.
